Eagle-eyed moviegoers will be able to spot many Oxford locations when actor Timothee Chalamet's new movie Wonka premieres today.

The new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic tale will host its world premiere at the Royal Festival Hall in central London with many of the stars expected to be in attendance.

The musical fantasy film tells the story of the character at the centre of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and "how the world's greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka".

Fans gathered in the streets of Oxford when news broke that Mr Chalamet, who plays the leading role of a  younger Willy Wonka, had been spotted in a purple frock coat and top hat filming at the Bodleian Library.

Scenes were also filmed in Catte Street, Broad Street, New College Lane, Brasenose Lane, Merton Street and Hertford College.

In February 2022 fake snow was sprayed over Merton Street while 1940s vehicles drove up and down.

And in December 2022 about 50 waiting fans screamed as the star appeared in a long, hooded, black cloak and a face mask on Catte Street.

"To work on something that will have an uncynical young audience, that was just a big joy," Mr Chalamet told Vogue.

"That's why I was drawn to it. In a time and climate of intense political rhetoric, when there's so much bad news all the time, this is hopefully going to be a piece of chocolate."

The star, who was Oscar nominated for the film Call Me By Your Name, also explained that his portrayal of Wonka would not be "cynical".

"This is a Willy that's full of joy and hope and desire to become the greatest chocolatier," he said.

And following the premiere in Tokyo last week, he told Variety: "If you would've told me when I was 12 years old - when I was 10 years old watching the Johnny Depp version of Willy Wonka - that I'd get to be here in Tokyo promoting this movie as Willy Wonka, standing next to Hugh Grant, I would've told you you were lying.

"So, I guess like the movie, follow your dreams."

The film also stars Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson, Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key and Sally Hawkins.

The actors recently began promoting the film again with a photo call at London's Tower Bridge after the US actors’ union ended a 118-day strike over a number of issues including pay and the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

It led to the film and television industry being paralysed as major Hollywood productions were stalled and actors were forbidden from engaging in any promotional activity for work.

Wonka will be released in the UK on December 8.
