Members of Oxford’s Catholic congregations joined priests for an annual procession through Oxford’s sticky streets on Sunday.
Marking the Feast of Corpus Christi, a holy day in the liturgical calendar celebrating Jesus’ part in the Eucharist, the procession was led by children scattering petals as they walked from the Oxford Oratory church in Woodstock Road to the University’s Catholic Chaplaincy in St Aldates – stopping at Blackfriars in St Giles.
There were some bemused looks from shoppers and tourists as the pageant, whose presence was announced by the sounds of singing and of Latin prayers being amplified through a loudhailer, made its way through the city centre.
Ahead of the festivities, Oxford’s bus companies warned passengers that the services might be affected when the parade hit St Aldates.
