The Lib Dems have remained in control of Oxford's Holywell ward after tonight's by-election.

The election was held because 25-year-old Richard Huzzey announced he was taking up a research post at Yale University in Connecticut, America.

Tonight Mark Mills ensured that section of the city stayed yellow by polling 188 votes, ahead of Paul Sargent - who left the Lib Dems to join the Conservative party - who polled 112.

Labour's Sarah Huchinson was third with 93 and Green candidate Chip Sherwood received 72.

The turn out for the vote was just 11.7 per cent.

The make up of the city council is: Labour (23), Lib Dem (16), Green (7), and Independent Working Class Association (2).
