Two mums have spoken of their delight and surprise after their daughters won the Oxford Mail's Draw Mummy competition.

Caroline Hinton, 46, and Jenny Wheeler, 36, did not know their daughters had entered drawings for the competition, only finding out when they saw them in the paper.

Mrs Hinton, of Bucknell Road in Bicester, whose daughter Rebecca, 11, won the eight to 11 category, said: "I was so shocked when I found out.

"The first thing I knew about her drawing of me going into the paper was when I saw it in the Oxford Mail.

"I was so pleased when I saw the picture, it was absolutely lovely. Rebecca is very artistic - she get's that from her dad, Philip."

Rebecca, a pupil at Brookside Primary School said: "Me and my friends all entered through school - we were told to draw pictures of our mums.

"When I was drawing her I just tried to think of what clothes she normally wears, and drew her in those, but in all her favourite colours."

Miss Wheeler, of The Oval in Didcot, was also surprised to learn her daughter Amy, five, had drawn a picture of her for the competition.

She said: "I didn't know anything about it because she did it at school. She drew me with a great big smile from ear to ear."

Miss Wheeler said she found out about Amy's drawing in the paper when she got to her job at Tesco.

She said: "We have a communications book at work and when I went into it someone had written a note saying, 'spitting image of you in the paper Jenny.'"

Both girls have won a prizes donated by the Woolgate Shopping Centre in Witney, including a digital camera and a teddy bear.

Shopping centre manager Rodney Hartnell said: "This is definitely one of the nicer parts of my job.

"Both of the winning drawings were fantastic and I hope they both enjoy their prizes."

Jo Coady, promotions manager for the Oxford Mail's parent company Newsquest Oxfordshire, said: "We had an overwhelming response to this competition with more than 1,100 people sending in entries.

"It was a hard job, but the two winner's drew fantastic portraits of their mums."
