A FOOTBALLER knocked his team-mate to the ground and stamped on his face during a drunken end-of-season celebration.

Former serviceman Colin Blake, of Abbott Road, Didcot, quit the Army after admitting the attack, which happened at the end of a nine-hour drinking session.

Oxford Crown Court heard the 23-year-old was caught on CCTV stamping on fellow footballer Wayne Jacks outside The Broadway pub in May last year.

Andrew Morgan, prosecuting, said Blake stamped on Mr Jack's face as he was lying unconscious on the ground before punching another teammate and also knocking him out.

But Peter Coombe, defending, said neither man was knocked unconscious during the incident.

He said: "Mr Blake thoroughly regrets what happened and has shown a great deal of remorse."

He added that Blake had intervened in a dispute between his victim and another man and had only stamped on Mr Jack's face because he thought he was about to get back up."

And he said Blake, who admitted one charge of grievous bodily harm and one of actual bodily harm, had quit the Army as a result of the attack - but hoped to rejoin after completing his sentence.

Judge Christopher Compston gave Blake a 12-month supervision order and ordered him to go on an anger management course and pay £500 compensation.

He said: "This was a nasty incident. I do accept there was some background to this matter but for you to stamp on anyone under any circumstances is wholly wrong."
