Pop star Jason Donovan is getting behind a fun run in aid of Oxford's Children's Hospital - challenging people to run the race as their New Year's resolution.

It is the second year the former Neighbours star has backed the OX5 run, which last year raised more than £50,000 for the children's hospital.

About 800 people took part in the event, a five-mile run around Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, sponsored by the Oxford Mail, which was started by Mr Donovan.

This year's race will take place on April 6. And Mr Donovan said he was delighted to support the cause for another year.

He said: "I congratulate everyone that took part earlier this year. It was great to meet so many participants before they set off.

"Despite the cold morning, everyone really enjoyed the event and raised a huge sum of money for the children's hospital.

"It would be great if we could beat that next year so I would urge people to sign up and take part."

He added: "Running really is a great way of keeping fit, so why not take up jogging as a New Year's resolution and raise money that will help thousands of poorly children for years to come?

"I've seen for myself what a great facility the children's hospital is and what an amazing difference all the community support has made."

Graham Brogden, head of community fundraising at the hospital, said: "We are incredibly grateful to the Oxford Mail for organising the event for the children's hospital and for everyone taking part.

"It is a challenge running five miles on a cold morning but it is not a challenge compared to some of the things the children have to go through, so we would urge people to sign up and help us provide the best services we possibly can for the children.

"I have run it and I will be running it next year and it is quite a challenging course, but it is a great experience."

He added: "It's a great Sunday morning out and there is always a positive, friendly atmosphere."

For the fifth year, Motorworld, the motor group of the Oxford-based Midcounties Co-operative, will be providing the lead car which takes competitors around the course.

Lyn Molony, of Motorworld, said: "As a co-operative motor group, we like to have as much community involvement as possible.

"We have supported the event with a team of all abilities. Some staff are signing up, but plan to jog or even walk. Staff are proud to be having a go."
