POLICE this afternoon appealed for three people to come forward who may have seen a traffic collision near Witney where a woman pedestrian was killed.

The incident happened at about 3.53pm on Thursday, November 15, on the slip road of the A40 towards High Cogges, Witney.

Mrs Christine Diacon, of High Cogges, a former teacher at Henry Box School, Witney, was struck by a black Honda CR-V travelling in the direction of Witney from Oxford, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on police bail until January 8, 2008.

Police said they would particularly like to hear from the occupants of two vehicles.

The first are a man and a woman - aged about 70 years - who were in a car towing a caravan and parked in the lay-by at the collision location.

The man went to the collision scene and spoke to people but left prior to the police arriving.

There is also the driver of a vehicle that was in front of the Honda.

This vehicle is described as being a light-coloured, high-backed vehicle; possibly a people carrier, a 4x4 or a van.

Sgt Kerry Clarke of Abingdon Roads Policing said: "This driver may not have actually scene the collision take place because it was behind them, but it is vital we speak to them to at least eliminate them from our enquiries.

"However, they could have easily seen the collision in their mirrors or may be able to help us with details of what happened just before the crash.

"The couple in the caravan definitely saw the incident and it is very important we speak to them."

Sgt Clarke can be contacted via the Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505.
