OXFORDSHIRE-BASED hotel chain Travelodge has revealed the bestselling books guests most frequently leave behind.
The company based in Thame, which runs 550 budget hotels across the UK, has compiled a list of the 20 books most often left in their hotel rooms over the past 12 months.
Staff discovered that half the titles were paperbacks that have become box office hit movies or critically acclaimed TV series.
This included books such as The Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, both by JK Rowling.
For the first time, two colouring books made the top 20 list of books left behind - The Secret Garden: An inky Treasure Hunt & Colouring Book and Harry Potter Colouring Book.
A Travelodge spokesman said: “Taking first position in the Travelodge Books Left Behind Index is the Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood.
“The Couple Next Door, by Sharri Lapena takes second position while the third most popular book left behind in Travelodge hotels is the hilarious children’s book, Bad Dad by David Walliams.”
As part of this year’s findings, the company’s hotel managers have reported a revival of the paperback.
Dan Brown’s mystery thriller Origin takes fourth place while the the fifth most popular was self-help book The Secret by Rhona Byrne. Annually Travelodge welcomes 19 million customers.
