A FURIOUS resident has placed a handwritten notice on a closed footbridge in Oxford - branding the closure "absurd" and attacking Network Rail bosses.

Devil's Backbone bridge, which connects South Hinksey and New Hinksey, was closed off recently after being damaged by a lorry.

The Oxford Mail has previously reported on concerns that residents of South Hinksey have had their main walking route to the city centre cut off.

But now, one angry resident has taken things a step further and slapped their own personal message between two closer notices on the New Hinksey side.

Taped to a temporary barrier preventing access to the bridge, the letter reads: "This is absurd.

"The bridge would only be dangerous if a herd of elephants went over it, not your average human being.

Oxford Mail:

"Due to an incompetent lorry driver local people have been massively put out and, what's more, nothing is being done to rectify this matter."

The mystery resident behind the poster then provides Network Rail's 24 hour emergency helpline, 03457 114141, and urges people to call and ask what is going on.

A spokesman for Network Rail previously said: “On Monday [August 13] morning a lorry driving along the access road hit and damaged the bridge.

“For safety reasons we have closed the footbridge to all users while we assess the damage and design a solution to make it safe."
