ROAD users are calling for traffic lights at a busy junction to be switched back on a year after they were turned off.

The lights, at the junction of Thames Street and Speedwell Street, were initially deactivated during the construction of the new £400m Westgate Centre.

But, despite the development finishing last year, the lights are still off.

Now Oxfordshire County Council has confirmed that the lights could be removed forever if an ongoing trial shows that they are not needed.

One local resident said on Twitter: “There’s going to be an accident here - police and council must prevent. One tiny sign on the lights and no other warning!"

They added that their mother almost got hit as she tried to cross.

Another road user added: "I was driving along Thames Street this morning towards Westgate when a van came out of Speedwell Street turning right and nearly smashed straight in to the side of my car. There needs to be better signage as this is an accident waiting to happen."

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire County Council told the Oxford Mail said the lights had remained off as a trial to see what impact it would have and whether they are needed.

He added that no conclusions had yet been reached about whether the lights would be returned to operation or removed forever.
