YOUNGSTERS got to Par-Tee with the professionals, who gave them some handy tips into bagging a hole-in-one.

Oxford golf professionals Joe Pepperell and Martin Woodbridge visited the children to celebrate the launch of the city's new Golf Club Junior Academy- which will swing open its doors to under 12's who want to get Put into Golf.

The pair talked about the importance of dedication, education and support– and showed the future golfers that sport is all about team work.

The pro's then took to the playing field, at West Kidlington Primary School, to show the youngsters how it was done.

Mr Pepperell, who is the Junior Academy lead coach said: "It’s important we pass on our experience and love of golf to youngsters and encourage people to play as the health benefits are so vast, that’s a big part of why we set up the Junior Academy.”

He added: "It was a brilliant day, all of the children were so receptive and really engaged in the session.

"It was a pleasure to share our passion for golf and sport more generally and hopefully we have inspired some of them to take it up."

According to research from Sport England, the quality of school sports facilities is an issue, they say that PE teachers expressed that there was dissatisfaction with the amount of facilities available at school.

However, they also say that young people are playing a wider range of sports outside of school, and research has shown that 95 per cent of young people agreed in 2002 that it is 'important to keep fit'.

Mr Woodbridge said: “The Junior Academy is a great way to get into golf and the package is tailored towards helping children break into the sport.

"It was lovely to see so many of the pupils enjoy golf, their enthusiasm and thirst for learning was fantastic. There were certainly some budding golfers in the group.”

Assistant principal of West Kidlington School–which teaches roughly 400 pupils, Joanna Simpson, said: Providing a nurturing educational environment is so important to us and having key figures from the local community visit and share their knowledge is a big part of our strategy.

"We share Oxford Golf Club’s values for healthy living and exercise and it was great to see the pupils really take to the golf session."
