ENGLAND fans were rejoicing in the streets of Oxford after a penalty shoot-out win against Colombia.

Supporters throughout the city were left elated after the nerve-wracking World Cup victory - with many fans taking to Holywell Street to sing Three Lions in celebration.

The team seemed close to defeat after a penalty by Jordan Henderson was saved, but a missed opportunity for Columbia and a save by Jordan Pickford sealed the deal for England.

Twenty-year-old Hunter Snowden, of Oxford, was ecstatic after seeing England soar to victory in the game’s final moments.

He said: “That was incredible. I would have liked to have seen England win straight out but couldn’t really have wished for a better experience than seeing them take it in a penalty shootout.”

Gareth Southgate’s team seemed as though they were heading to victory after striker Harry Kane scored a penalty in the 53rd minute.

But, in a crushing moment for England fans, Colombia equalised with a header in the 93rd minute - pushing the game into an agonising 30 minutes of injury time.

Before tonight, England had won just one out of seven penalty shoot-outs in major competitions - and many fans were biting their nails as the team went head to head with Colombia.

The shoot-out began on good form, with Kane and Marcus Rashford shooting on target for England.

But Henderson’s miss left many fans thinking it was all over.

A miss from Colombia, however, followed by a crucial save by Pickford, brought football a step closer to home.

Fans in the King’s Arms in Broad Street, Oxford, burst into celebration as it became clear England would proceed to the next stage of the tournament.

Terry Lindsay, of Oxford, said: “I’ve never seen anything like that - to win in a penalty shoot-out with a save like that to seal the deal at the end.

“It was absolutely incredible. I really didn’t know if they had it there.

“I see England winning it all now - absolutely. The World Cup is coming home.

“I trust Gareth Southgate. I think he’s a phenomenal leader.”

England will now go onto play Sweden in the quarter-final of the competition.

If Southgate’s team continues to be successful, the England squad will go against either Russia or Croatia in the semi-final.

It is hoped that England will be helped by the absence of former winners Argentina, Spain and Germany after the teams were knocked out in earlier games.
