A MAN had his jaw broken in two places in an 'unprovoked attack' near Oxford's Westgate Centre.

A 24-year-old man was walking at the west end of Queen Street on Sunday at about 4.15am when he was approached by a man outside Beaverbrooks jewellers.

The victim was then punched in the face, causing two jaw fractures, which required hospital treatment.

The mystery attacker then fled the scene on foot along St Ebbes Street onto Littlegate Street.

The suspect is described as male, of average height and a slim to average build.

He was wearing a long black jacket of mid-thigh length with the hood up, light blue jeans, dark trainers and a dark t-shirt with a lighter motif across the chest.

Investigating officer PC David Mathieson based at St Aldates police station, said: “This appears to be a completely unprovoked attack, and although it happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, there were still a lot of people in the area.

“I am appealing for anybody who saw the incident, or who believes that they may know who the offender is, to contact 101.

“We are conducting further enquiries, and I would like to re-assure members of the public that this type of unprovoked assault is extremely rare in Oxford.”
