RESURFACING of an Oxford road has been branded 'woefully inadequate' by a cyclist.

Oxfordshire County Council smoothed over Henley Avenue last week, the road connecting Iffley Road to Rose Hill, but was criticised for leaving it covered in grit.

Days later a resident wrote on the FixMyStreet problem-reporting website, accusing the council of a 'cheap fix'.

The anonymous person said: "Huge swathes of gravel are making it terribly unsafe to ride on.

"The level of dust on the road due to the unfinished nature of the work is dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians.

"Send someone to visit...you will see what terrible impact this woefully inadequate piece of road 'repair' is having on cyclists' lives."

Another resident, reporting their concerns on the same platform, wrote: "Resurfacing has left very deep gravel [tracks] down this steep hill.

"It's almost impossible to keep control of a bike through these, especially when moving at the speed of other traffic."

The road surface now appears to be clear of surface grit, though (as of Thursday evening) road markings had not been repainted.

Council spokesman Martin Crabtree said workers had carried out surface dressing.

He added: "This is a standard technique which involves using bitumen and chippings to waterproof the existing road and extend the life expectancy of the road.

"As is normal with this type of work signs are put out advising of the new surface and that care and lower speeds are required while the surface beds in."
