OXFORDSHIRE'S oldest golf club opened up for a day of family fun and a chance for people to boost their golfing skills.

Hundreds came out as the sun shone on Oxford Golf Club in Hilltop Road, Cowley on Sunday.

Along with a bouncy castle and ice cream, golf enthusiasts of all ages received coaching tips from club PGA pros Joe Pepperell and Martin Woodbridge.

Oxford City Stars mascot Comet made a special appearance and encouraged young golfers to try their hand at ice hockey with a stick and puck stand.

Oxford Golf Club general manager, Stephen Nicholson, said: “It was a fantastic day and brilliant to see so many families enjoying the facilities, the weather and each other’s company.

"We are proud to be part of the community and felt it was important to open the club to everyone to show what we do. Hopefully we have encouraged a few more people to take up golf.

“It was great to see so many youngsters enjoying the coaching sessions with Joe and Martin and really taking to golf. Helping get youngsters into golf and sport more generally is so important.”

Founded in 1899, the course is said to be the oldest in Oxfordshire and includes a putting green, practice area and coaching school.

Oxford City Stars director, Greig Box Turnbull added: “It was great for the club to play a part in a great community event and help showcase sport in Oxford."
