A WOMAN is in a serious condition after being hit by a bus in Oxford on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services shut Magdalen Bridge for two hours after the incident with buses forced to divert.

South Central Ambulance spokesman David Gallagher said: "We received a number of calls around 14.20 this afternoon all reporting a collision between a pedestrian and a bus on the High Street, Magdalen Bridge.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance to the scene.

"The female pedestrian has been taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in a serious condition."

Witnesses reported that traffic was backed up in both directions due to the road being closed from St Clements Roundabout.

The road was reopened at around 4.15pm with bus routes returning to normal.

However traffic was still disrupted in and around the city centre for several hours.

Oxford Bus Company has confirmed one of its buses was involved in the incident.

Spokesman Greig Box Turnbull said: "We can confirm one of our City3 buses was involved in an incident with a female pedestrian on Magdalen Bridge at 2.15pm.

“An investigation will be carried out to understand how it happened. We are liaising with the emergency services and will help in any way we can, this will include reviewing our CCTV footage. Our thoughts are with the lady who was taken to hospital and our driver.”
