PLANS to revolutionise transport in the city and clean up Oxford’s air have been stepped up with plans for more electric vehicle bays.

Last week it was revealed Oxford will become the first city in the world to trial ‘pop-up’ on-street electric vehicle charging points.

Now Oxfordshire County Council wants to create a designated parking space and charging bay for electric vehicles in Cutteslowe.

It part of a Go Ultra Low trial to install 100 electric vehicle charging points in residential streets across the city.

The latest bay has been proposed for Hawksmoor Road at the west end of the road.

It will be reserved for electric vehicles, which can park there and charge up for a maximum of three hours at a time.

It is currently in an area of general parking from Monday to Friday 8am to 6.30pm.

Last week Oxford City Council was awarded £474,000 to take part in a pilot scheme for pop up charging points.

As part of it, there will be 20 UEone retractable bollards installed on streets with on-road parking.

The bid was made by Oxford City Council and two companies, Duku and Urban Electric, and has received £473,595 of funding from Innovate UK, the Government’s innovation agency.

All projects aim to reduce air pollution and further lower Oxford’s toxic emissions as the city looks to implement a Zero Emissions Zone by 2020.

In March, the Government pledged to adopt a ‘more formal approach’ to support the city council to tackle Oxford’s illegal levels of air pollution.

But the council has asked for more funding and support to make the ZEZ possible.
