A CAR spinning and hitting the barrier on the M40 caused long queues on a treacherous stretch this morning.

The accident, which caused the wheel of the vehicle to come off, happened between Junction 5, A40 Stokenchurch and Junction 4 A404 / A4010 High Wycombe Handy Cross Roundabout.

One lane was closed until around 9am with delays stretching into south Oxfordshire for those headed southbound towards London.

The stretch between Tetsworth and Stokenchurch was very icy, with vehicles slowing right down and many losing grip on the surface.

Police confirmed the collision had been cleared as of 8am but gritters were out making the road safe to reopen.

It comes as the 'beast from the east' heads ever closer to Oxfordshire, with the Buckinghamshire stretch of road already experiencing snowfall overnight.
