A PROFESSOR is preparing to offer some insight into the overuse of antibiotics in modern medicine.

Prof Carl Heneghan, a clinical epidemiologist and leading expert in evidence-based medicine, will deliver a free public talk in Witney on Saturday, March 3.

The Professor, from the University of Oxford, will explore what antibiotics are, why they don’t always work and why some doctors refuse to prescribe them.

In this presentation, Prof Heneghan, who is known for his ability to transform complex medical issues into plain English, will show why antibiotics are not always the answer to all of society’s health problems.

The talk will demonstrate how bacteria can adapt and find ways to survive the effects of an antibiotic and how this is already proving to be a major threat to patient safety.

He will also discuss the origins of antibiotics and what may be in store for them in the future.

The event was organised with the support of independent watchdog Healthwatch Oxfordshire.

Also supporting the event is Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group.

The talk will be held at the Corn Exchange, in Market Square, at 10.30am until 12pm on March 3.

Entry is free and refreshments will be available.
