The Oxford Mail's Film Festival is in full swing and cinema lovers will tonight be able to enjoy cult science fiction flick Serenity.

It is the third night of the festival and the curtain goes up at 8.30pm at the Phoenix Picture House, in Walton Street, Jericho, Tomorrow night will see Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy starring opposite each other in Before Sunrise.

Meanwhile, on Friday night it is the turn of cinematic legends Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis to grace the screen in the classic film Some Like It Hot.

Quentin Tarantino's modern gangster film Pulp Fiction will be rounding off the film festival on Saturday evening.

With a cast including John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L Jackson and Bruce Willis, this gritty film with its clever dialogue was a popular choice among Mail readers.

Tickets for the film festival cost just £3 when you take along a copy of that day's Oxford Mail and, for those who forget, copies of the paper are on sale in the lobby.

Serenity, directed by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was voted as top choice in the science fiction category by Oxford Mail readers.

The festival kicked off on Monday with Ridley Scott's Alien and last night saw Daniel Craig's first outing as James Bond in Casino Royale.

Glad to see this great film won over the awful star wars, a real case of style over substance!
If you've never seen Serenity on the big screen before your in for a treat, enjoy.

Agree with C, Serenity is a superb film - very much what the future will look like. None of the antiseptic meanderings of Star Wars or Star Trek - this film shows real humans in very possible settings.

Bah humbug. I'd rather watch Piney Gir play at the Jericho Tavern next door.

I didn't get it. My brother was raving about it, but said you needed to have seen something else beforehand to put it in context. I obviously hadn't!

Andy, your brother was almost certainly referring to the TV series Firefly, which ended up being scrapped. The film was made to massage the pain felt by the myriad fans who complained about this.
By the way, the big fella with the ludicrously large gun in the picture above looks preposterous. Leave the cannon type guns to Judge Dredd, Joss Whedon!

Oh yes, that was it. Firefly. And he'd only just got over Babylon 5. I'm with you on Dredd, so long as it isn't that shortarse Stallone. Sin City, now that was my cup of cocoa...

Good day everyone.
The movie is indeed better when you watch the series first. I became a fan of the show long after the series/movie had been out. I never paid much attention to it when it first aired and until some friends of mine lent me the series boxset, hadn't thought about it since those first few bizzare commercials feat. Smash Mouth ?>.< After watching the first few episodes I really started to like it..Anywho, Give it a watch if you haven't seen it, and check out the podcast called "The Signal" for all things Firefly. Thanks~Deri
