RESIDENTS in West Oxfordshire have been reminded by its district council that there are measures how they can cut down on waste going to landfill by recycling this Christmas.

The council will pick up extra recycling from households in black boxes, open cardboard boxes or clear bags after Christmas is over – but all of these things must be placed out alongside homes' recycling wheelie bin on collection day.

Glass bottles and jars should only be placed in black boxes because of safety reasons when they are collected.

Residents can also recycle small electric items, like mobile phones, hair dryers and kettles, by leaving them out in black boxes.

Councillor Carol Reynolds, the district council's cabinet member for environment, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to recycle their waste, especially as there is always so much over Christmas – most items can be recycled from cardboard and plastic gift packaging and wrapping paper, to turkey carcasses and leftover Christmas dinners.”
