CONTROVERSIAL ideas to boost recycling rates have been rubbished by Oxford Mail readers.

Yesterday we reported how Oxford City Council was considering taking bins away from city centre streets for short periods, to let people 'appreciate the problem of litter'.

It also floated plans to remove words from litter-related signs and use images instead, to overcome language barriers.

The measures are among those being considered by a council panel, which is brainstorming innovative ideas to boost recycling before a related Government grant runs out next year.

Of almost 700 people who responded to our reader poll about the issue yesterday, 94 per cent said removing the bins was not a good idea.

More than 430 readers also had their say about the signs, with over half stating that removing words was not a good idea.

The story also prompted scores of comments, with people branding the proposals 'crazy' and joking it was a poorly-timed April Fool.
