WHAT lies beneath?

Archaeologists working on Oxford's £120m flood alleviation channel are about to find out exactly what lies beneath this corner of Oatlands Road Recreation Ground off Ferry Hinksey Road.

The Environment Agency contractors have begun setting up fences around green fields along the five-mile route of the proposed channel from Seacourt Park and Ride on Botley Road to Sandford on Thames.

In the coming weeks they will be digging through the dirt to find out what evidence there is of ancient civilisations under the ground.

The work could either reveal Roman mosaics, Norman houses and Medieval coins, which would be a boon to local historians, or it could reveal nothing, which would make the Environment Agency's life a lot easier.

The excavations are due to run until November, and the evidence gathered will form part of the official planning application to create the Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme.
