POLICE are investigating an alleged assault after an Oxfordshire Senior League football match was abandoned on Saturday.
The referee, Andrew Barrett, is reported to have been punched in the face in the 40th minute of the Premier Division game between Marston Saints and Horspath.
It is understood, the incident took place after the player had been booked for dissent following a foul.
The referee immediately abandoned the game with the score at 0-0.
Mr Barrett reported the incident to the police and a report has been sent to the Oxfordshire Football Association.
Thames Valley Police said no arrests had been made yet but enquiries were ongoing.
