SIMON Eastwood admitted his match-winning display for Oxford United on Saturday was probably his best performance for the club.

The U’s goalkeeper was the hero as Michael Appleton’s side shocked Sky Bet Championship high-fliers Newcastle United 3-0 in front of a sold-out Kassam Stadium to reach the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup for the first time since 1994.

Eastwood made three fine first-half stops to ensure the scoreline remained goalless at half-time.

But, after Kane Hemmings had put United ahead a minute after the restart, the keeper’s finest moment came on 67 minutes when he made a superb penalty save to deny Aleksandar Mitrovic.

That swung the momentum in Oxford’s favour, and a first goal for Curtis Nelson followed by a superb header from debutant Toni Mart- inez sealed their giant-killing.

It puts Appleton’s side in tonight’s draw for the last 16, and the keeper was delighted to have played his part in a sensational all-round team display.

“The manager told me beforehand I would have to be at my best if we were to get a result,” Eastwood said.

“I think it probably is my best display for the club. I was pleased with the saves in the first half, but to then make a penalty save and us go on to win the game like we did was very pleasing indeed.”

He added: “The penalty was probably the turning point. If they score that I’m sure they would have put us under real pressure.

“I didn’t know what way he was going. It was a guess. But I’m delighted with it.

“The result is massive for us and the clean sheet caps a great day.”

The goalkeeper has produced a number of inspired displays since joining the club in the summer, something acknowledged by both Nelson and Hemmings.

“Easty was on fire and it just shows how good a keeper he is,” Nelson said.

“We’ve seen it through the season and today he was on top form. We’re all very grateful he’s behind us.”

Hemmings added: “Easty has a reputation of making crucial saves at good times and if they score that penalty you don’t know which way the game would have gone.

“I’m delighted for the big man. He’s been terrific all season and showed how good a keeper he is.”

United will be ball No 3 in tonight’s draw, which will take place around 7.20pm on BBC 1.

Most supporters will be hoping to land a tie against Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea or Arsenal, but Eastwood has other thoughts.

“I know nobody else here would want them, but I’d love Blackburn Rovers, my former club,” he said.
