THOUSANDS of people across Oxfordshire have signed a petition to prevent Donald Trump from making an official UK state visit.

The nationwide petition - which has more than £1.5million signatures - said a visit from President Trump would cause 'embarrassment' to the Queen.

More than 5,000 people from the Oxford West and Abingdon constituency have signed, while almost 7,000 from Oxford East have done so.

The number of signatures from the two areas are among the highest in the country.

Wantage has had more than 3,500 signatures with Witney, Banbury and Henley all approaching 4,000 too.

But a Downing Street spokesperson has this morning rejected calls for the state visit to be stopped saying it would risk 'undoing everything' achieved by Mrs May and Mr Trump during their US meeting last week.

It comes as public demonstrations against President Trump are being organised across the country, including tonight in Witney.

Protesters are due to take to Witney Market Square calling for an end to the new US President's policy of limiting immigration from some countries with large Muslim populations.

In Facebook post, organisers said: "Witney is a town proud of its values of inclusion and compassion and has done incredible work to help refugees as well as being the new home to several Syrian refugee families.

"We must not stand in silence and neutrality to the horrific developments under Trump."

The nationwide petition against a state visit by Mr Trump was started by Graham Guest and ends on May 29 2017.

The petition says: "Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government, but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen."

Andrew Smith said he shared concerns with his constituents in Oxford East.
