Children will go free on Oxfordshire's buses as part of this year's Streets for People Day.

The event, aimed at encouraging more families to leave their cars at home, will be held on Saturday, September 22.

Three bus companies - Oxford Bus Company, Stagecoach Oxford and Thames Travel - will be offering free travel to under 16s across the county, and part of Broad Street will be closed for special events.

Streets for People, organised by Oxford City Council, is now in its third year.

Oxfordshire County Council leader Keith Mitchell, who has branded the event as 'tokenism' in the past, said he would look at alternatives to the car this year. Mr Mitchell, who is travelling to Newbury races that day from his home near Adderbury, said he would try to use public transport for some of the journey.

Lord Mayor, of Oxford, councillor John Tanner, said: "It is fantastic news that we are holding this event for the third year.

"I'm thrilled that young people in Oxfordshire will benefit from the free travel offered by the bus companies."

In Broad Street, there will be activities including a street market.

There will also be events across the city held by local communities.

Residents are urged to attend one of the events or organise their own activities.
