Cyclists splashed their way through puddles as they took part in a fundraising bike ride at Blenheim Palace.

More than 600 cyclists took part in the Big Bike Ride, at Woodstock, and many donned waterproofs to combat the rain.

The event had been organised to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust, which campaigns for leukaemia sufferers.

Last year, Cherwell School pupil Hassan Hussain raised £1,250 at the event - days before he drowned in an accident in the University Parks.

So the 15-year-old's family and friends saddled up to take part yesterday to add their weight to the fundraising effort.

Cyclists had a choice of a 15-, 35- or 65-mile route though the Oxfordshire countryside, which all started or ended in the grounds of the palace.

Stuart Lees, from the trust, said: "It was a really good turnout, especially when you consider how bad the weather was.

"We have not counted all the money yet and not all the donations have come in, but expect to raise around £50,000."
