FUNDRAISERS aiming to make an elderly attack victim feel safe again have been ‘amazed’ by the community’s generosity.

Villagers in Sutton Courtenay united in mutual disgust after their 85-year-old neighbour known as Aldo was battered in his own home by a burglar.

Since setting up a JustGiving page after the attack on Monday evening, about £1,500 has been donated to help fit a new door and security system.

Nigel Primrose, who helped to set up the campaign, said: “It’s absolutely amazing to give so willingly to someone they don’t even know. It’s kindness and beyond. I am totally shocked.”

The Sutton Courtenay Tyres manager said customers have also raised about £200 in collection boxes at the garage, adding: “Children have even come in to give a pound of their pocket money.”

Police are still hunting for the money-hungry thug who smashed into Aldo’s home and repeatedly whacked the widower’s head with his own walking stick, inflicting gashes and bruises until Aldo appeased him with £40.

Mr Primrose said several companies came forward to fit a new door for free before Aldo returns home from respite. Others offered food, lock fitting for all of his windows and CCTV.

One anonymous donation was submitted to the sum of £250, which Mr Primrose described as an act of ‘sheer kindness’.
