THE MP for East Oxford gave youngsters at a local school his wholehearted thanks after receiving a flood of letters from concerned pupils on global education.

Andrew Smith was moved to visit Tyndale Community School in Temple Cowley on Friday in response to scores of hand-written letters by youngsters.

Pupils across all year groups have been focusing on barriers to education around the world this term and wrote to Mr Smith asking for him to raise the issue in Parliament.

Assistant principal Janey Velasquez said: "We have a teacher who is passionate about global citizenship and it was her idea.

"The school wrote letters to Andrew Smith to persuade him to use his status in Oxford to see if he could do anything about it."

On the day Mr Smith was presented with a vast envelope of letters from youngsters to pass on to decision-makers if he can.

Mrs Velasquez added: "It was wonderful. One of our Year 3 children read out his letter really clearly to all the children, staff and parents at our celebration assembly.

"He very positively said 'Thank you so much for doing this; you are very lucky and I will do what I can'."
