Glorious sunshine welcomed hundreds of people to Rose Hill Community Centre this afternoon for a fun-packed family day out.

The fifth annual Rose Hill summer extravaganza was held for the very first time at the new venue in Carole's Way, and organisers did their utmost to make the most of the venue.

Craft stalls, face painting and attractions from a bungee run to laser tag kept people of all ages amused.

The event was organised by Oxford City Council and GreenSquare housing association as well as being supported by the national lottery.

GreenSquare's Fran Gardner said: "We are delighted to be able to hold the summer extravaganza at the new community centre, and with the venue and all the support we get from the city and colleges.

"The reason we put on events is to bring together the wonderful, very diverse community of Rose Hill residents and give them the opportunity to meet, enjoy good food and have fun."

Up to 400 people were expected to attend over the course of the day.

The fully-equipped kitchens at the new centre also allowed for the Oxford Food Surplus Cafe to join the event for the first time, serving up mouth-watering cuisine made from food that would have otherwise been thrown away.

Parent Cathy Pitson, 42, said: "My day is going fine. It's nice to be outside with no rain.

"We are just hoping to have a fun day. There's not a lot to do out here and when you haven't got much money it's ideal. My kids are loving being outdoors."

Fellow resident Margaret Roper, 70, said her grandchildren were "loving it".

She added: "I have been here for 30 years; this event is new and I'm very impressed."
