AN OXFORD United fans' initiative to raise money for hundreds of children in care to watch each home game next year has got off to an "incredible" start.

The OxVox project was only launched late on Friday evening but more than £1,500 has already been raised towards tickets for some of the county's most vulnerable youngsters.

The Oxford United supporters trust launched the scheme after one of its members Liam Walker – a carer in the county – came up with the idea.

The 'One of our Own' campaign aims to raise £6,000 to secure 50 tickets for children in the care of Oxfordshire County Council for each game at the Kassam Stadium next season.

OxVox chairman Jeremy Faulkner said: "We are absolutely thrilled to bits but not surprised as for campaigns like this the Oxford United fanbase has always been first class.

"This is a project that will benefit so many youngsters, the community and the club itself and from a supporters trust point of view it is absolutely the sort of project we should be running.

"We have already had upwards of £1,700 donated in just a few days and the support has been incredible."

Mr Faulkner said if donations continue to pour in even more children could have the opportunity to attend matches next season.

Oxford United star Kemar Roofe has donated a signed away shirt from last season, which will be auctioned off later this week. To bid email chair@oxvox.org.uk or get in touch with @YellowsForum on Twitter.
