FAKE letter boxes could be placed on your front door in an attempt to steal your mail, police have warned residents.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) announced it had noticed an increase in reports of fraudsters placing fake letter boxes on homes.

Residents are sometimes unaware of the letterbox as the fraudsters will remove them when they have what they need.

The mail is then used to open various lines of credit with financial providers in the name of the innocent resident.

People are urged to be vigilant and check for suspicious activity, tampering of letter boxes or suspicious glue markings on the wall.

Anyone who has been affected by this fraud or any other scam can report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
