THE rhythm and flair of Brazil has made its way to Oxford.

New children's classes have been launched in Headington teaching kids the art of capoeira, and it is certainly keeping them active.

The Afro-Brazilian martial art mixes dance, fighting, music, song, theatre and more to give the sport an authentic Latin flavour.

Instructor Chris Graham said parents with children as young as five had been trying it out.

He added: "Capoeira is great fun and can teach children a lot of skills, including balance, strength and co-ordination.

"Over time we have seen a massive interest from children in capoeira and have worked in schools doing demonstrations, workshops and taster days.

"We're hoping with the Rio Olympics coming up this year it can excite and inspire children and bring more interest in capoeira."

The Oxford dancers are part of the Capoeira Angoleiros do Mar, a group originally from Itaparica Island in Bahria, Brazil.

After being launched in 2010 the Oxford group has also seen an increase in adults trying out their local classes.

Children's sessions are every Tuesday from 5.15pm to 6.15pm in Headington Parish Hall.
