A WACKY marriage proposal saw a teacher clamber on to a car in central Oxford to publicly profess his love for his boyfriend.

Peter Sheward, 37, got down on one knee to now-fiancé Adi Himpson, 42, in the most unconventional of ways.

The lovebirds, from Drayton who work in Oxford, were applauded by passers-by who filmed Mr Sheward proposing to Mr Himpson outside Keble College last week.

Mr Sheward said: “Being a drama teacher, I don’t do anything on a subtle level.

“I’d known for months that I wanted to marry him, but I kept telling him I didn’t want to, just to put him off the scent. I had this planned the whole time.”

He sent his future husband a YouTube video which pictured their favourite times together and ended by telling him to look outside.

Mr Himpson, who was at work in Oxford University’s communications office, was shocked to open his blind to see his boyfriend standing on top of his colleague’s car.

Clutching white cards inspired by the hit movie Love Actually, Mr Sheward held up each one containing romantic works until he reached the final question: “Will you marry me?” Mr Himpson said: “My colleagues were in on it – some of them had known for months. I was absolutely bewildered. It wasn’t until the last card that I realised. It was absolutely awesome.”

He ran out to the balcony to say yes – three times. With a Haribo jelly ring on his finger, passers-by cheered and applauded the newly- engaged couple.

Mr Sheward said: “I loved the normality of two gay men proposing. No one was thinking ‘oh that’s a bit weird’.”

Mr Himpson’s colleagues filmed the entire proposal, which they put on YouTube on Saturday. Yesterday it was tweeted by actress Bonnie Langford who wished “massive congratulations” to them both.

The pair met in 2014 on a Doctor Who Facebook fan page, and “fancied each other from afar”. After being prompted by another fan to share their secret crush they started flirting.

Three weeks later, following six-hour daily Skype sessions, Mr Himpson visited Mr Sheward who lived in Pembrokeshire.

Mr Sheward said: “We met and as soon as I saw him I thought ‘yes’.”
