THE New Year may have brought a cold chill with it, but it did not stop members of a diving club take part in their annual tradition.

2016 marked the 60th anniversary that the Oxford branch of The British Sub-Aqua Club have plunged into the cold waters of Hinksey Lake on New Year's Day.

Finds over the last 60 years include a bikes, prams, a moped and an old defibrillator.

The hardy divers took the plunge into lake and swept the debts of the murky waters for hidden treasures.

One diver, Andy Pickering, has been a member of the diving club for 35 years.

He said: "Doing this is just a great way to start the year.

"It's good to get in the water because we do not train and do as much outdoor swimming at this time of year.

"It's just a good tradition that we like to keep going."

Mr Pickering was joined by fellow divers Howard Thomas and Steven Litchfield in the annual dive.

The club does diving off the coast of Weymouth during the season.

Mr Pickering added that he usually finds a lot of junk in Hinksey Lake.

He said: "We find all sorts, bunched up newspapers, bikes.

"One year we found an old defibrillator."
