A COUPLE had a lucky escape when a tree crashed to the ground in front of them as strong winds struck Oxford yesterday.

Guy Bingham, 48, and his wife Nicola were returning from lunch to their home in Rutherway, North Oxford, when they heard a crack.

Mr Bingham said: “It fell right in front of us. There was a huge gust of wind just before. Luckily, there weren’t any cars parked and we weren’t closer.

“It probably wouldn’t have hit us but it would have covered us in broken twigs and branches.”

Mr Bingham, who owns and rents properties in America, said he had noticed the strong wind as the couple enjoyed lunch at the nearby Brasserie Blanc in Walton Street.

He added: “Even in the restaurant you could see the shades blowing around and lots of leaves flying by.”

A yellow warning was issued by the Met Office for gale-force winds yesterday. The tree was cut up and removed later in the day.
