YOUNG cadets who pledged to raise £250 so they could replace a snapped remembrance oak sapling have already smashed their target.
Witney Air Cadets stepped up to raise the money after the town council discovered the commemorative oak tree planted last year in the town was broken in an act of vandalism on this year's remembrance weekend.
In less than one week the cadets have already raised £510 for the cause.
Mayor of Witney Jim King called them a "credit to the town".
Witney Air Cadets leader Mike Caffrey said: "We are absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed at the support from the community.
"We can now plant more than one tree, which we hope to do in January or February.
"The Woodland Trust has also donated a tree, from an acorn on a tree grown at Windsor Castle for the diamond jubilee. So it's quite a special one."
