Hundreds of people marched to a demonstration outside the Radcliffe Camera today in response to terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday night.

The march took place from 2pm with the aim of showing solidarity with Paris, its people, survivors and victims of terrorism all over the world.

The demonstration followed Friday night’s horrific attacks on venues around Paris, including restaurants, the Stade de France and the Bataclan concert hall, which left 129 people dead and about 350 wounded.

About 400 people attended the event, which was organised by members of the Ecole de Management de Normandie business school in Magdalen Street.

Many of those attending were French or have families in France.

Student Margaux Bourgeois, 22, said: “I’m from Brittany but most of my family are in Paris – everyone is okay.

“On Friday I was at a friend’s house and we were supposed to go out. Then we saw the news and spent the whole night watching.

“It was really shocking and emotional. It’s a crime against humanity. To have so many people here showing their solidarity today is a great thing.”

Twelve-year-old Lucille Tardif, whose family are originally French and now lives in High Wycombe, said: “I think people thought that after what happened with Charlie Hebdo in January, it was over and that the worst had come. I hope it won’t happen again.”

On Saturday night, a service of prayer and reflection was held at Christ Church in St Aldate’s, and a vigil was held in Hertford College Chapel in Catte Street.

A number of Oxford students and residents also joined the marches.

Among them was Oliver Smith, 18, from Oxford University, who said: “I saw this on Facebook and thought it was important to go. It really affected me – France is so close to home.”

Chairman of Oxford Islamic Information Centre Dr Hojjat Ramzy issued a statement today condemning the attacks.

He said: "‘We all condemn any act of terrorism in the name of Islam or in any other name.

"These attacks were despicable and abhorrent.

"We pray that all terrorists are brought to justice.

"Our hearts and prayers are with the people of France, and the families of victims across the entire world."

Yesterday Oxford United players held a minute's silence with Cambridge United players at the game at the Kassam Stadium and Chipping Norton Rugby Club players did the same today at their fixture against Oxford Harlequins.
