A SURGEON who saved a woman’s legs from amputation said he feels “humbled” after being named as one of the county’s medical heroes.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Bob Sharp has been shortlisted for our Hospital Heroes award after he was nominated by patient Jamie Williams.

He was praised by Miss Williams for helping her live life to the full having feared she would be left wheelchair-bound as a teenager when a bone deformity condition began to worsen.

Mr Sharp said: “I am honoured to be nominated for this award.

“It means so much that somebody has taken the time and effort to go through the process.

“The nomination, of course, represents recognition of my whole team.

“I am lucky enough to do the most rewarding job, in the world’s greatest hospital with the world’s greatest staff and I hope the happy, smiley culture that exists in the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre continues to help our patients get through these stressful experiences.

“Jamie’s kind nomination is most appreciated.”

Miss Williams was diagnosed with spina bifida at the age of two and developed Charcot Foot, which weakens bone and causes deformities in the feet and ankles, at about 14.

The 23-year-old, who is a ward clerk on the children’s surgical ward at the Oxford Children’s Hospital, met Mr Sharp when she came under his care at 16.

Headington resident Miss Williams said the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre foot and ankle consultant has been by her side during the 16 operations she has needed since, which included having some of her toes amputated.

She said bone infections forced her to have an operation to prevent her having to have her legs amputated in November 2010, with the operation leaving her unable to walk for 10 months while she recovered.

Miss Williams said she will be forever thankful for Mr Sharp’s exceptional care, honesty and love for the job, which has enabled her to continue walking and battle her conditions.

She added: “I think it’s fantastic he has been shortlisted.

“There is a massive support behind him. It just shows all his hard work has paid off.

“It’s not just a job to him, but something that he strives to be good at. I have never met anyone who says they dislike Bob.

“The way he treats his patients is just lovely to see.

“I think I would be really proud if Bob won.”
