TUNES will echo across a Cowley club this week as folk singer Peggy Seeger, right, takes to the stage.

She will perform at the Cowley Workers’ Social Club on Friday to raise cash for the Save Temple Cowley Pools campaigners.

It comes two weeks after housing plans for the former leisure centre site were unveiled by housing association Catalyst.

Oxford City Council agreed to sell the facility, which closed last December, to the housing association for £3.5m if planning permission is granted.

The housing association revealed further details of its plans to build a mix of 48 flats and houses on the site at a public exhibition.

Catalyst told visitors at the exhibition that 24 of the homes it hopes to build will be affordable, with 19 for social rent and five shared ownership.

Plans also include a new green space near neighbouring Cowley Library, as well as a new access road, parking for 48 cars and three spaces for library visitors.

The housing association has not yet submitted its planning application, but is looking to start construction next July, with work taking about 22 months to complete.

Ms Seeger, who was a frequent swimmer at Temple Cowley Pools, campaigned with the group against its closure.

Residents are invited to join the Benefit for Cowley concert at the Between Towns Road club from 7.30pm.

A short film United We Will Swim will also be shown, telling the story of campaigners in Glasgow who defied the city council to keep their pool open.
