THE idea of putting a railway flyover near Wolvercote has surfaced again (June 12).

Anyone who thinks that this is a good idea should go to have a look at the Aynho junction flyover just south of Banbury, or at least look at it on a map.

The amount of space it takes up is a lot more than a road flyover would, both in horizontal and vertical distances, because trains cannot negotiate steep slopes. As far as I can see on a map, the Aynho junction itself takes up about a mile, not counting the sloping tracks either side.

Be careful what you wish for!
