Colour can speak volumes and so perhaps an exhibition of abstract paintings does not need a title. The artist, Laetitia Lecque, gives her pictures captions but you can have an individual response to them. Her work is neither cold nor impersonal. Gallery owner Jennifer Corrigan experienced an immediate affinity to it.

She opened her gallery in Stert Street, Abingdon, in May 2006. Before that, her work took her around the world. She first encountered Laetitia' s work, in 1993, in Paris in a Gallery off the Champs Elysées. She was enchanted and wanted to buy one but was not sure which to choose. She returned on Sunday, before catching her Eurostar train home, only to discover that the Gallery was closed.

Jennifer said she was determined not to be disappointed. "I asked my French sister-in law to ring the gallery on Monday and reserve the painting I had selected. I made a special trip to collect it. I loved it so much that I traced Laetitia to her studio south of Paris, so I could buy more. When I decided to open the gallery, she was one of the first artists I approached and invited to exhibit here."

While I was viewing the pictures for this preview, a customer entered and said of one of them: " I could look at that every day and never be bored with it."

That may be due to the interesting colour combinations but also to the layering. The artist says: "I use oils to generate luscious texture. That is why I paint with a palette knife."

My favourite is Verglas No 2 (pictured above). The cool elegant shades are transformed by a hint of warmth. The artist recently visited China and Chinoiserie and others pictures were influenced by that trip.

The exhibition opens today and continues until May 3. I think Jennifer will discover she is not alone in responding to this artist.
