I write with reference to your article about an unpleasant incident of vandalism in St John's churchyard in South Bar, Banbury, when both hands of a statue of the Virgin Mary were broken, Catholic anger at Mary attack (Oxford Mail, April 5).
I should point out that Catholics do not "pray to" statues. This accusation has been made since the Reformation, but it is not true.
A statue is simply an aid to prayer, a reminder of Holy things and persons. We are not idolatrous!
