PEOPLE living and working near the Brize Norton airbase have been warned not to be alarmed if they hear sirens - and see a plume of smoke rising from the runway.

A flurry of activity is expected today as part of a training exercise which began yesterday. The exercise, which involves a simulated plane crash, is designed to test the reaction of RAF and civil emergency crews, allowing them to rehearse procedures in the event of an aircraft accident.

It involves staff from the base working with Thames Valley Police, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, South Central Ambulance Service and Oxfordshire County Council.

A spokesman for the base, Katie Zasada, said: "The scenario involves a simulated crashing of one of our aircraft on to the runway."
