ST GEORGE probably had more than a colander on his head and a whisk in his hand when he killed the dragon.

But children at the Oxford Nursery had an easier time yesterday when they celebrated St George’s Day with messy play and patriotic cookery.

Youngsters played with red and white paint, made scones and raised money for the charity the African Children’s Fund to help celebrate England’s patron saint.

Getting stuck into festivities at the nursery on the Oxford Science Park was Bella Upsdell. The three-year-old said: “It is a good day. I am making jam and cheese.”

Jamie Mason, four, said: “I am making cheese and batman cakes.”

The children are set to parade around the Science Park, in July.

Nursery deputy manager Alanah Johnson said yesterday: “The children had a fantastic time.We are hoping to do the cake sale this evening or on Friday morning and it will raise money for the African Children’s Fund.”
