THE new layout of Oxford’s Frideswide Square is starting to take shape.
The first phase of the busy junction’s £5.8m overhaul started in February and builders have now started laying new Yorkstone slabs and kerbs.
Oxfordshire County Council said it is also clearing the area for new drainage as well as pits for trees to be planted in.
It is hoped that the new layout – a roundabout by the station connected by a boulevard to two mini-roundabouts outside the Royal Oxford Hotel – will help traffic flow more freely.
Every day thousands of drivers pass through the square, which includes the entrance to Oxford Railway Station. The second and third phases of the work are set to start in July and will run until October, according to the county council’s website.
They will focus on the south side of the square and the entrances to Park End Street and the station, but the council said access to businesses and properties there will be kept open “at all times”.
