New Thames Valley Police Chief Constable Francis Habgood showed he can still handle hands-on policing after helping with an accident on the M1 in Nottinghamshire.

While travelling from Yorkshire to his home in Buckinghamshire on Sunday, he came across a three-vehicle collision on the motorway near junction 26.

Police spokeswoman Michelle Nichols said Mr Habgood made sure all the drivers were uninjured, stopped the traffic, helped the cars to pull across to the hard shoulder and cleared the road of debris.

This is not the first time Mr Habgood has been a hero in a crisis.

In April last year he was first on the scene following a crash on the A34.
