MY experience is not so good as Ray Holton (March 23). I passed through Frideswide Square several times recently. The traffic flow is greatly improved as it was some years ago when there were mini roundabouts prior to Oxfordshire County Council putting in the traffic-jamming traffic light system.

I fear with the council’s obsession with traffic lights, new ones will appear just to keep their hand in. I note that the pedestrian crossing in Hythe Bridge Street near the junction with Worcester Street has been programmed to ensure that traffic flows are not as smooth as they could be.

It seems that as soon as a pedestrian presses the button the light goes red against the traffic. This creates jams back towards the station and up Beaumont Street. The light appears to flash on and off like a Belisha Beacon. If the pedestrians could be persuaded to wait a little longer so that the frequency of change was less, then this would improve traffic flow even more.
