REGARDING this week’s story that Oxfordshire could get scheduled Europe flights (March 30), Oxfordshire county councillor Ian Hudspeth and London Oxford Airport head of development Tony Farmer , pictured right, should read the comments of the county council’s own strategic environmental assessment of its transport plan’s proposal for the expansion of London Oxford Airport.
It says: “New infrastructure to support the development of air travel services (e.g. supporting the growth of London Oxford Airport) could encroach on undeveloped land, with the potential to impact on biodiversity, green spaces, the built environment, and the wider landscape.
“The future of air travel services (e.g. those that may increase flight capacity) in Oxfordshire has the potential to cause significant negative impacts on noise, air quality and greenhouse gas emissions and negative impacts on green infrastructure, countryside, landscape and human health, which will require further consideration at project level.”
It couldn’t be clearer.
Expansion of the airport will create more noise, pollution, and traffic for the surrounding villages of Kidlington, Begbroke, Yarnton and Woodstock, and increase the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
It should be opposed, along with other proposals in the transport plan – such as a relocated park and ride at Langford Lane – that will adversely affect the character of these villages, the quality of life of their communities, and the surrounding countryside.
